Reddish North End Football Club in Stockport held its first smokefree football match this Sunday (22 January), to promote healthy behaviour to children, and was widely supported by parents asking for ‘more sports events to be smokefree for children.’

Greater Manchester local football clubs are planning to promote healthy behaviour to children by making their sites smokefree during matches, as part of a pilot ‘Smokefree Sports’ campaign, which has been set up by local social enterprise Healthier Futures in partnership with local authorities.

Healthier Futures is encouraging anyone who smokes to contact their local stop smoking service to access free support to quit, as new Public Health England campaign reveals that 45 people a day die of cardiovascular disease caused by smoking - over 16,500 a year in England.

Hospital sites across the North West are being urged to take steps to become tobacco-free to improve the health of their patients and staff. . This week Public Health England (PHE) Chief Executive Duncan Selbie has written to every NHS Trust Chief Executive asking them to implement a ban on smoking by patients, staff and visitors across all hospital buildings and grounds.
